About Type B Gas Device Certification
Type A gas devices are (typically mass produced) appliances used in domestic or light commercial areas that have an appliance badge. Un-badged gas appliances, including industrial gas installations, vehicle or vessel fuel gas systems, and many commercial gas systems are considered Type B gas devices.
Under Australian legislation all gas devices must be approved for sale and use by the Chief Inspector, Petroleum and Gas, or by a person or body approved by the Chief Inspector.
Strict safety requirements mandated in the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 also require that all Type B gas devices be serviced every 6-12 months, depending on the type of device. It is a legal requirement that proper servicing of Type B appliances is conducted in accordance with the Australian Standard AS3814:2015 Industrial and Commercial Gas-fired Appliances.
